Canti brakes and suspension forks

This might be in the wrong section for the build i'm planning but I think its right for the opinions i'm looking for. I've got a 98 gt tempest frame i was planning on building with some modernish sus forks and swapping an lx groupset from another bike. but the lx group has canti's.

do they work ok with supension forks?

whats the best place to have the cable hanger? on the forks or on the steerer?

Thanks anyone

Canti's will only work if there is a Hanger on the fork, a steerer/headset mounted one would allow the cable length to change as the forks compressed/extended.

The GT probably has cable routing for a V brake on the rear and not canti's, you can buy a clamp on stop to make it work though

I've just looked at the 1998 GT catalogue and the Tempest ran V brakes. You may be able to get canti's to work on the back with the right stop but it could be tricky due to the under top tube routing.

i'd not considered the back brake yet, horses for courses then i suppose, will have to build it up with the right equipment

How about fitting Maguras? Solves the problem at both ends, no need for hangers, you can run any sus fork as long as they have brake studs and you get great braking to boot

Re:

Loads of fork options with canti hangers, like rockshox mags or judys, pace or manitou. Just search fleabay or for sale section on here? :D

That still leaves the issue of not being to use the Group set I already have, I am in two minds about this build though, get it done quick and ride it, or take my time and pimp it with nice stuff

That's true, it's going to be a few months before I get started so there is time to find something, but I could get a set of brakes for price of a fork then would just need a rear shifter to finish off because I'm running that Group set as 1 x 8 anyway
