Can you trust online comparison sites?

I've bought another Discovery, so I went to NFU where I always insure my 4x4's.

They gave me a quote of £680 and would not budge any lower.

On returning home I got some quotes over the phone £580 Adrian Flux and £530 Peter Best, still £300 more than last time I insured A Discovery.

So I got on the comparison site and got a few quotes for £300.

I can't believe the difference.

So can you give me some reasons not to go with them?

That stupid fat man on the TV.

That's the only reason I need to not use that comparison site. I do use others though. They tend to be pretty good and if you put real numbers in the cheapest provider will usually ring you back with an even better price.

Just check the terms have a similar level of cover and that the excess is something you are happy with - some low quotes have huge excesses.

Also check the big sites not on comparison sites like Direct Line.

big insurance companies own those comparison sites, so i tend not to use them, went with direct line, who dont use those sites

Direct Line really stung me. The premium going up and up by around a ton a year despite not making a claim. I went of a well known meerkat related site and really did save.

I found it easy to tick boxes and add/subtract excess amounts so that I was comparing like for like.

They're not on the comparison websites but I can't imagine the likes of Stephen Fry and Paul Merton come cheap!

comparison sites wanted £300 £400 third party, Adrian Flux only asked for £270 fully comp...

Depends on the car I suppose.

I just can't figure car insurance.

I always had very good prices from NFU then in 12 months they double it.

Exactly the same car, address etc. Wtf!!

I'm confused with the number of price comparison websites... there are so many of them, offering different levels of service for different markets. Some do car insurance, some do household bills, some do bills AND insurance... Some use fat blokes singing, some use Russian mammals, while another has a singing cartoon woman....how am I supposed to know which one to use that will offer the best price

What I need, is a price-comparison-website comparison website to show me which one to use

Your insurance company can only be classed as good when you have claimed-until then you never know
Nothing gets on my ti*ts more is when they put the price up ,only to say they can match a cheaper quote - tough, should have given me the best price initially
For that reason I have switched both my polices in the last month

I got sick of direct line for my home as they insisted on a "security audit"...turned out that all they wanted to do was sell me a burglar alarm.

The muppet who wrote the security report on a bit of bog roll missed that I had two doors which opened outward and needed frame pins.

As said, you only know how good your insurance is if you have to claim. Lots of them give low prices by offering derisory values for write-offs.
