Can I use ? _____Chain question

I know that 7 speed chains are slightly wider than 8 and 9 speed chains, but could I use a 9 speed chain on a 8 speed setup ?

TIA

:)

yes, think so mate,i did a search on this last week and found that some people had ran them for ages with no probs whilst others said theyd had a few glitches.

I ask the question as I have a load of nearly unused 9spd chains from my modern collection  that are just sat there collecting dust, and It would save me going out to buy a 8 speed if one of these would would do the job fella...

Cheers for that andy..

Can't say I've tried this but just a thought- if the 9spd chain is narrower as a 9spd block is closer spaced, will the shifting be as good on the wider spaced 8spd block? If you already have the chains just give it a go and see what happens. I'd be interested to know myself.

I've read one report on another forum that the narrower chain improved shifting on a 7 or 8 spd setup.

I have had a little look, but it was something i cam across on a random surfing day and i cannot refind it. It was a guy saying he had shifting problems on his 8 or 9 spd and his LBS suggested he try a 9spd chain (as was their normal practice) and it gave him crisper shifting.

Thanks fella, appreciate your efforts, I suppose the only way of finding out is by trying it .. I will update this thread when I've had a go... :D

Thanks guys..

I had no probs using 9spd in a 7/8 spd set up for a 18 months.

7 spd chains are the same as 8 spd as the gap between cogs are the same for 7 as they are for 8.
