Could someone please tell me what the difference is between Campag and Shimano? Could I use a shimano chainset/groupset with Campag wheels, I have heard not, but why?

The cassette carriers are different so you have to have the right carrier to use the two brands sprockets. I believe that Sheldon Brown's website and the CTC site have 'Shimergo' listings for how to best mix and match. Gear spacings are all different too.

8speed shimano and campag have the same spacing between sprockets so it's all interchangeable.

I use a Campag crank with a 9 speed shimano group with no problems what so ever.

If you want to mix and match 9 speed shifters, casette, mech etc it's a no go unless you buy the addapter thingies, they're a pulley sort of affair. I've never used them. There are loads of threads on the CTC website, do a search for shimergo, it'll bring back loads of hits.

No they don't!

Shimano 7, Campag 7 and 8 all have the same pitch, 5.0mm
Shimano 8 has 4.8mm, but the floaty top jockey on the Shimano mech means that it can be persuaded to shift OK with 7s.
Campag 9 has a pitch of 4.5mm (if I remember right)
Shimano 9 has a pitch of 4.35mm

Furthermore, Shimano and Campag mechs move different amounts for the same cable pull.

Campag shifters pull a bit more per click than Shimano.

By chance, Campag 10 and Shimano 8 have the same cable pull per click, so you can run a Shimano 8 back end with Campag shifters.

To further complicate things, Campag altered their shifting in 2001 in preparation for 10 speed and so there are old and new 9s shifters and mechs.

hamster's right. you can also (which I do) use campag 10 shifters with a shimano 9 back end by attaching the cable clamp slightly different on the mech. its called hubbub. try googling it and you'll see some pics of what i mean.
