Campagnolo Road crank on a MTB ??

Re:

As Mike says, a close ratio road cassette would be a better bet, combined with a 46 or 48 tooth chainring up front it should give you the gearing you need for the road.
I run a 46T front ring on my mtb with slicks, with a road cassette (11-23 I think?) and that's all the gears I need really, when you get up to speed it's your position on the bike and wind resistance that stops you going much faster.... But there's always clip-on tri-bars !

I think the issue with your proposition is that the cranks are Campag, and from a road groupset. Although I used to run a Truvativ Touro touring chainset on my mtb, straight swap with no issues on my Raleigh Dyna-Tech frame.

it's not that hard to spin out 46/11 going downhill on the road, but overall a 46/36/26 110BCD mtb chainset and an 11-25 or similar will give an ace range of gears

Upgearing a vintage tripple is a good idea.

Doesn't sugino and TA make 50 and 52 tooth chain rings for 110 BCD cranks? I was shopping for a Sugino AT for my wife and found a number online that came with 50 tooth big rings. I'm running a 48 big ring with a 9 speed ATB cluster which also has an 11 tooth high gear and have trouble spinning that out. I'm running 29er disc wheels and heavy duty touring tires. On my old back up commuter 26'er I was easily able to spin out with a standard ATB crank (46 teeth big) and the same 11-32 9 speed rear when I had Tioga City Slickers in the `1.25 size.
