Campagnolo Record Pedal Threads Problem!!

Anyone help me with a campagnolo record thread problem
Removed from a knackered crank, excessive heat striped the alloy onto the pedal threads.
How can i remove the alloy?
I have tried various techniques but to no avail
Threads are 9/16 x 20
Is there a special tool for cleaning or re-threading?

Please see photos
Thanks
Malc

Get a set of needle files about £2, with several triangular. The alloy will file off without damaging the much harder chrome plated steel.

^That could probably work. I'd try that 1st also.

You'd need a left and right die of course... I have the matching taps but no dies...

Hi cipolinni :-) "Dip it in plumbers flux (if you have any), this will help it to run. Re-heat the area and keep a wire brush to hand. Use a plumbers blow torch, when it starts to run give it another few seconds in the flame and then take it away from the heat and wire brush. You should be able to clean it in 1 reheat.

Dont be afraid to reheat the pedal, the melting point of that is a few hundred degrees higher than the alloy stuck to it. It can't possibly damage the pedal anymore than it already is (which is likely to be none).

IF you use a bucket of water to cool it after its clean, dip the pedal in coolest end first, and slowly quench it. It chases the heat this way.

You will have to regrease the pedal bearings when its all cooled down, as you will already.

OR

Find yourself an old steel crank arm, dip the pedal in cutting oil, and gently ease the pedals through the steel crank arm. If you know how to use a tap, then this is the same thing, back off the thread every few twists to clear the debris. DONT let the pedals get too warm from re-threading or it will bind all over again :-)

Hope this helps, yours Laz.

It could be a bit messy (and dangerous) but apparently caustic soda will dissolve aluminium but not steel, I'm not sure about chrome though.

If you haven't done it yet you could clear most with a junior hacksaw, the pedal spindle is probably harder than the blade.
