I'm restoring an old Claud Butler 'Competitor' for somebody and one component which will definitely need replacing is the rear mech as the back plate has worn through.

It's a Campagnolo Nuovo Gran Sport exactly like the one pictured below.

What sort of period would this have been around as it'd be handy to be able to date the bike and find a relatively period correct replacement.

I'm very unfamiliar with old road bikes and components so any help would be greatly appreciated.

1978-1985 if it has the black plastic "protectors" over the adjustment screws, as shown in the figure. If not, then could be as early as 1974. If it has a Campag front mech, check for the lip on the front edge of the mech --- if it is there, it is post 1978; if the outer plate is flat, is is pre-1978.

The picture looks just like the one on my 1982 Raleigh.

An excellent resource in such cases is velobase.com. Also http://www.vintage-trek.com/component_dates.htm and http://www.velo-retro.com/tline.html for Campagnolo dating.

Good luck with the restoration.

BTW, if you mean the back plate to the cage, then I have one off a Campag 980 (1980). I know it isn't identical to a Gran Sport, but I can check if it is the same shape. If so, you are welcome to it. Let me know if you'd contemplate the idea.

Thanks for the information Nick. I'll have a good look at the bike tomorrow.
If the mech plate fits then I'd be delighted to take it off your hands.

I'll be in touch.

Thanks again

Gran Sport pitched up in 1978 IIRC, Viking seemed to be the first to put it on a road bike in the UK (Viking Severn Valley?) as we could not buy it as a retailer..

Only available to bike builders and not the general public.

The first generation Gran sport was an absolute bargain......OK the brakes didn't have the black rubber adjuster and the rear mech was a copy of the nuovo Record apart from having a pressed steel cage for the wheels.....Campag trying to sell a cheaper product...... but it was basically Nuove Record in all but name :)

I left in 1978 to uni and lost track and Campag may well have made it "cheaper"

rear cage plate

Is this the part that is worn out? If so, this one, off a 980, has exactly the same shape as a Gran Sport one. It is a little thicker (and better quality) than the pressed steel one on the GS, but that shouldn't cause an issue.

Let me know if this is what you are looking for --- better than scrapping the mech.
