Campag Nuovo Grand Sport whats biggest cassette i can use?

I have a 7 speed 13/23 cassette on my lovely Pete Mathews which works fine with my Campag Nuovo Grand Sport rear mech. ( i have a 52/42 front chainset) My old legs need something a bit easier but dont know what the biggest cassette i can fit? anyone help please? thank you

According to Disraeli Gears the maximum capacity for the rear mech is supposed to be 28 but in practice 25 teeth is more realistic. I'd agree with this, an NR rear mech struggles a bit with a 28 rear sprocket.

I think you're inside the total capacity (26 teeth) with that set up.

It's probably simplest to fit a new chainset - swapping the cassette does little by comparison with ditching that heroic 42T ring.

Campag Triples look reasonably OK with older stuff. I run a 30/39/48 with a Chorus short cage mech and 12-23 9 speed (admittedly somewhat newer than yours). The big-big is a bit rattly but works enough for safety.

Or you could enter the weird world of TA ans Stronglight with all sorts of
possibilities (but also all those obscure French threading issues).

I like the way you are thinking . 1st gen , 600, arabesque...... all 130 BCD and smaller inner ring then campag.

If you`re lucky you might find a 41t for the Campag chainset - for the 144pcd that`s as small as it goes. I know the feeling - so do my knees - managed a few yards out of the saddle over Towton Moor yesterday for the first time in months!
