Does anyone know what's in the official cleaning tablets? There must be a cheaper way of cleaning the bladder?!?! £9 for two tablets grrrrrr....

Anyone got any ideas or good cleaning methods? I've used bicarb to get rid of the taste but I'm not sure of it's disinfectant qualities... :?

Use sterilising tablets used for cleaning baby bottles etc. Biggest tip is to keep the bladder in the fridge when not in use. Done this for three years and my bladder is still clean inside. If you use any energy drinks or similar give it a rinse with hot water straight after use.

+1 I keep mine in the freezer.

Sterident, usually used for false teeth, cheap and readily available.
Iodine water steriliser tablets from camping stores are another good and cheap idea as well as milton or baby feed bottle steriliser products.

Keeping it in the freezer is a good idea provided you cleaned and sterilised before storing. Cold inhibits bacterial growth but the wee buggers will start growing again once they warm up unless you wiped them out first

I use Milton baby bottle sterilizer like Lewis and then keep it in the freezer like Kaiser. No black mouldy bits for me :D

This is why I use bottles for "daily" use ... but when it comes to using the 'back Milton's the chap. Cleaning the straw is a pain, though.

Fill bladder (Camelback's not your own) with Milton, leave for 30 minutes, hang it up then have the straw stretched out underneath it and just squirt all the Milton out. Work fine if you've just used it.

If it's already full of black bits where you've been lazy and just left it for months since last using it then serves you right. Take the straw off and pass through some fine string through it, dental floss works well, tie a small bit of cloth to one end and pull that through, it'll clean the crap out then use the Milton. If the bite valve's full of crud, I'd throw it away and buy a new one, though you can try soaking it with milton and scraping the bits out if you can reach them.
