Hi, following on from the chat over here: Cannondale M500 and Pepperoni Q - the bike's finished. (I also posted this on STW so apologies if you're on there too).

I'm delighted with how this has turned out. Frame and fork off ebay lay in the shed for a few years until I got round to it a couple of weeks ago. Completed yesterday, ridden today.

The black is Hammerite, the cream is Plastikote, the red is vinyl. Frame is 1990 SM-series, perhaps SM600 from the traces of blue paint on the dropout. Fork is a 1990 Pepperoni. Easton bar, Brooks saddle, vintage Hope/Mavic wheels built by me, 16x40 gearing.

I had to increase the steerer thread length. This is a home-made die cut from an old 1" headset race. Hard work, but worked a treat.

The rear axle is reverse-dished to carry a singlespeed cog.

It rides beautifully. Very light and confidence-inspiring.

The graphic turned out well I think.

Nice work. Just built something along the same lines based on an '89 Rockhopper, I too had to extend the thread on my steerer which was done by a shop. It never occurred to me that I'd be able to cut my own thread in this way, I'd have thought a headset part would be too soft?

You get a Mac Badge by riding with us and the next meet is Kirroughtree this Saturday the 27th march although I believe our Fife members might be planning Blairadam Woods by Kelty this weekend.

Nice bike by the way

Knobby: If you follow the link to the other thread, it was a comment from Sheldon Brown that did it. He states that headset races are made of hardened steel as are dies, so if you cut slots with a tungsten-carbide blade you can use it as a die. I realised I had a tile saw that fit the bill, so I got on with it. It worked, but it was tough!

Cheers, al.
