I have uber respect for his acheivments, but I have trouble putting him right at the top due to the minority nature of his sport. I could be persuaded though.

What about Lennox Lewis?

Shane Warne? He's an honourary englishman. He makes me wish I was an aussie.

Phil The Power Taylor gets my vote though. He's an arrow chucking monster, and the best there has ever been by a long shot.

When the gun goes off - proper sportspeople do it on their own, no mechanical assistance, no team tactics, no best car or engine.

Good "work ethic" there and one I've been putting into practice this cyclo-cross season - no spare bike, no pit helper, no van driven by a mate and stuffed full of Park Tools and spare bits, and definitely no sponsorship from bike shops offering financial and mechanical assistance plus flashy carbon wheels with Dugast tubs worth a few hundred quid per pair. Just me plus a bike. And I reckon I did OK under those circumstances....
