Bottom brackets

Can anyone recommend a good hard wearing hollowtech compatable bottom bracket thats gonna put up with the british weather for more than 5 months!!

I'm getting fed up of replacing it all the time, i've been using Shimano up till now!

To be honest i've never had a problem with shimano. i have a hope one on another bike which has not given me any trouble if i was going to replace the shimano it would be with a hope. just done another build using the x-type but cannot say about that as it's not been used yet.

you need to go back to a square taper chainset with proper sealing. Whoever thought an outboard bearing on the most exposed, scruffiest part of a bike was good wants shooting.
But I guess that 200g weight saving makes it all worthwhile

Agree. But you can get a excellent square taper for 150 grams from TA

I've been told by at least one retailer that the Axix BBs aren't that well sealed and was warned off getting one for off-roading.

A web search turned up this Tange offering which looks very nice although hard to come by in the UK:

Strange thing is i had exactly the same thought!!

All the years i had square taper i never, ever had a problem. The only trouble is it's on a modern bike and i not long ago forked out for a new chainset!!

i always had creaking or cranks wouldnt stay on with square taper

few years ago now though, dont seem to bad since.

I don't think anyone ever thought outboard bearings would be better. What they thought was that larger diameter axles would be better, and they were right. The trouble is they left less room for the bearings inside the standard size BB shell. So smaller bearings were used, but these wore out quicker. They then moved the bearing outboard of the BB shell so they could increase the axle diameter further and use large bearings again. The trouble here though is they are more exposed to dirt ingress. Early ones suffered badly, however newer designs seem to last well.

There are now a few new BB shell standards apearing BB30, BB91 etc. these have a larger diameter allowing even larger axles with large inboard bearings. The trouble is at the moment there seems to be a few different standards, some of which will go the way of the betamax video no doubt. That's okay though because who keeps a bike frame for more than a few years anyway!!!

Reading recently about a bunch of tourers, who go all over the world off road and on, they recommend square taper as it seems to be the hardiest and less troublesome,. I suppose much can be said about, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I have never had problems with square taper, apart from getting the buggers out when they are shot, so I see no reason to change.

The other thing about going to a different standard, is one is limited to that standard, but if taper fits are used in industry, then they are good enough for me. Experience of taper fit pulleys driving stone cutting blades, driven by crude agricultural type engines in very abrasive conditions by unskilled get the job done yesterday type operators.

Sometimes the race mentality is not good in all applications.
