Bottom Bracket Sizing - Cannondale Killer V

Hello all,

Quick question with a simple answer I hope. I need to replace the BB on my 1993 Killer V 900 and suspect the one that was fitted in 199x that I need to remove was the wrong size (68 x 122). My question is, how do I know what is the correct width to use (Optimum gap between chainset and BB cup?) as I am also changing the Chainset to an M739 XT?

Many thanks in Advance.

If the shell width is 68mm (measure it, but it should be) and the chainset was not low profile (like M730 XT or Deore DX) then it would have been the correct bottom bracket

Cannot find a 1993 Killer anythign, but 1994 has a V900* that came with a CODA 500 chainset and a Shimano bottom bracket (cartridge style).

anyway, Chainset determines length so for M739 try 107/110 or the 113 if you need the wider stance and 50mm chainline.

Since it uses the middle band size it could be either really, but the 122 in my eyes means 107/110 would be the one to aim for.

* as far as I can read, the Killer was introduced in 1994

Thanks for the info Fluffy Chicken, very helpful.

The shell width is 68mm and from memory, the chainset removed a long time ago wasn't a low profile one (can't remeber what) so the 122mm would make sense. After your advice, I also found the Sheldon Brown website (VERY useful!!), which says the chainline with the M739 chainset should be 47.5 so the 110mm should be fine agreeing with your recommendation. It has a big learning experience (that has only cost me £30 in wrong BB so far!) so thanks for your help.

My frame number starts with 'EI' which according to Vintage Cannondale is September 1993 so could have been a 1994 MY bike. In fact, now you have pointed it out, I have looked in the 1993 & 1994 catalogues and going on the fact that its a polished frame, it looks like it is a '94 Killer V 900 as no other '93 or '94 bikes of that frame style (Killer V or Delta V) were available polished, assuming it has not been done since but it looks too original (read knackered!!) to have been.

Thanks again for your help. Another Cannondale lives on!

Time to start the next project.......
