Bored...time to drink some profits...

Let me know if you need any help with the Talbot, one of my favourate reds, and it's been a long while since I saw one of that vintage...

Well, "le Pech" is the name of their estate ("The Plateau" or "The Hilltop") and it's "à Buzet" (at Buzet - Buzet AOC) so it's literally "le Pech à Buzet".

Wikipedia says this about the word "pech":

Du point de vue toponymique, « Pech » est la retranscription française de l'occitan puèg qui dérive du latin Podium et désigne un endroit plat et surélevé.

From a toponymic point of view, "Pech" is the French retranscription of the Occitan word "puèg", which derives from the Latin "podium", meaning a raised, flat place.
"Abusé" is homophonic with "à Buzet". One of the labels on the website explains that the wine was refused Buzet AOC classification as it was too atypical. So it's a means of putting Buzet on the label without putting "Buzet" on the label, and falling foul of naming regulations. The whole thing also seems to be punning on the phrase "la pêche abusive" which refers to overfishing or illegal fishing.

I don't get the point of the pun though. When it comes to humour, French really is a foreign language.

Thanks Jim....I did wonder about ' a Buzet'

I'm still unclear as to why it is vdp and not aoc....the cepage is legal.

I've tried it...it tastes like Buzet.

I'll call someone in the know.

Oh...and I totally agree with you regarding the French and humour. Mostly lost on me although to be fair there are quite a few funny French movie's out there.

Help me out here...what does Le Pech Abuse mean?

cchris2lou":2f09acmm said:
obviously abuse same as in english but le pech must be from a local language called Patois .

pech is mostly translated as bad luck but in this case it probably means hill or small mountain .

So you stock "use the hill wine"? Brilliant, you sell wine named after a heckle made famous by Retrobike at Mountain Mayhem. Speak with John about getting some Retrobike branded bottles for Mayhem 2012!

I also find it novel to see a bottle of French wine without the seemingly compulsory drawing of an old house on the label.

Several of those look way outside of my usual drinking budget....or are the very traditional-looking labels deceptive?

The bottle in the last photo reminds me of an I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue double entendre involving the delightful Samantha and her gentleman friend with "a disappointing Semillon". Speaking of which, Clue fans will be pleased to know that it's back on Radio 4 at 6:30 tonight. :)
