Will be fitted to k force light cranks, to frame and xtr m980 gearing so something in keeping with the build.

I'm a 1x noob, so open to suggestions on tooth count for xc rides, mostly with family.

Open to suggestions on where to buy or offers if you have something suitable.

I'd try 32 or 34 tooth up front for starters.
They aren't "in keeping" with the rest of your build, but I use the Snail / Deckas 1x rings from ebay. Cheap enough to buy a couple different sizes to try.
Or have a look at Absolute Black chainrings...
