Bike Swap

Hello.

I have a (slightly) odd proposition for someone. The company I work for operates the cycle to work scheme. Which effectively means I get a brand new bike half price from Evans cycles. And I've got a voucher already for this years bike. But now I’ve found this site, and realised I don’t have to have a new bike, I can have one of the bikes I fantasised about as a teenager long ago.

Which means I no longer want a new bike. And Evans won’t let me give them a retro frame and have them build me up a single speed warrior.

So I either have to buy a new bike, and switch all of the parts onto a frame I find from here/ebay. Or I can swap someone’s retro love for a brand spanking new bike. Which is preferable.

I realise that this may not appeal to many of you, but is there anyone out there with a steel tubed retro beauty that I could swap for any brand new bike that Evans sells worth £800 or under (take your pick on colours, sizes etc.). Not for everyone I appreciate, but someone may want the parts list if nothing else. Most appealing bike offered in exchange wins.

When drawing up lists of my perfect bike back in the day, the frame was often a Fat Chance Yo Eddy. But sometimes a Dave Yates donkisnob. Or Chas Roberts Dogs Bollx. And although it’s not steel, a Pace RC100 often crept onto the list….. So one of those a base would be amazing. But would listen to any offers.

I’m 6’2 and so ride an 18/19” bike. That’s the most important bit. But it’s going to be used to ride to work, and so doesn’t need suspension particularly. Doesn’t need to currently be singlespeed. But if it is, that’s a plus. And I’d like your bike to be as minty as possible.

Anyone interested?

You may struggle to find a RC100 complete for that price, you will definately struggle to find a mint RC100 at that price. You will guaranteeably struggle to find any one with a mint RC100 who is looking to swap it for a modern bike.

You have the right idea though, much cooler than a modern stead. Good luck in your search!

For clarification, it doesn't necessarily need to be one of those bikes. Just that those are the ones that I'd sell my mum for!

Any proper old school bike considered...

Find the most interesting bike at evans.pick one with fox forks, decent discs and groupo[the components that sell well]

Split it up and put all the stripped parts on ebay starting at 0.99p,[put it all on at once]
A bike is always worth more in bits than whole.
Buy the bits/frame/bike of your dreams with the proceeds 8)

a small note of caution.....

if you read your cycle2work contract you'll see that the bike does not belong to you until the end of your lease.

If you sell the bike or part of the bike that would be theft from your employer.

Also the tax man will then see the scheme as a benefit in kind and want the tax back directly from you (not from your employer).

also should you lose your job (or choose to move to new employment) during the scheme
you could be asked to give the bike back to your employer or be asked to produce the bike
for a fair market valuation to allow you to buy it from them.

cycle2work schemes are brilliant but you have signed legal documents to get the tax break.

most cycle2work schemes now have a sliding scale for the fair market valuation
(used to allow you to make the bike yours at the end of the scheme)
assuming you just hide the bike and bits in the loft
this valuation could result in you paying quite a high price to transfer ownership of the bike to yourself.

if the bike is used and abused then the valuation and fair market value fee will be very low.

They want you to buy a new bike (helping the economy)
they want you to ride the bike as much as is possible
(reducing traffic congestion. health care costs and pollution in cities).

if your new bike is nackered at the end of your lease you obviously helped the government achieve its aims.
