Looking at my spares I've got some new brake levers I'm not sure I understand why I've got them - BL-R550 - are they for Vs or cantis?

And in a box of new parts I won for a song on ebay a couple of years back, a new Deore rear mech - but the front mech is "Nexave" - where does that fit in the line up?

The clue is the "R" in the part number: they're flat-bar levers for a road group. They're normally paired with road caliper (dual pivot) brakes, but will work fine with cantilevers or single pivot calipers. They won't pull enough cable to work well with V-brakes.

Nexave was (maybe still is) Shimano's urban/hybrid range. They often seemed to use it to try out novel ideas that didn't always make it to the mainstream. It's mostly pretty decent stuff. Some of it's actually quite nice.

Cool - not sure where I bought them from, they're NOS, in a box, but as they're usable with cantis, that's really what I wanted. I have a new Deore set that specifically say V-brake on the box, I was just puzzled with these ones.

Certainly triple-compatible, but that's all I can say. Hybrids more usually use bigger chainrings, but I think there have been compact Nexave models, and there was one edition that mixed bolt circles in an unusual way. I've also found one (broken, stripped thread on the mount, I think) Deore DX right hand STI shifter, that for the life of me I can't understand why I've got - well I understand why I've got it, but not how I sorted it out - I remember breaking it, and I remember buying a pair of XT brake and shifter (push-push) in 95, just can't understand how I've got the broken one, and what I must have done to put the bike right.

Same for a pair of DX cantis, too - I'm completely baffled as to why I've just got two of 'em in my spares - can't understand why I would have bought just two, or why or what I would have replaced on my then bike - and this was long before ebay...

Anybody else got parts that puzzle them as to why they've got them?
