basic Campag 8 speed rear mech cable question

It is 'which side of the securing nut does the cable run?'. The options are 'wheelside' or 'outside'.

I tried outside but couldn't get the indexing to be perfect.

(Should know the answer myslef but its been a couple of years since I used the groupset).

It is Chorus if that makes any difference.

The indexing is puzzling though. I assume a Campag cassette and pre-2001 shifters?

Yes, all parts are matched pre-2001 groupset and worked perfectly together when last installed. I cleaned and checked the cassette last night and it is not worn. The chain is a brand new SRAM 8 speed specific one.

I asked ref the cable routing as on my 11 speed Campag Chorus set-up, the cables passes on the wheelside of the pinch bolt.

Having read Sheldon Brown, lubing the BB cable guide may help so will try that tonight.

I had a quick look online at pictures of campag rear mech cables and switched the routing to the inside/wheelside of the securing bolt.

Bingo, everything now seems to work.
