Bar tape advice?

Hi all,

I've just bought some J-bars to try on my singlespeed, and i'm thinking of fitting bar tape instead of grips.
This is where i need advice.

-Is there anything i should look for, or avoid in a tape?
or
-Can anyone recommend a good tape?

When I needed to replace the bar tape on my road bike I found Youtube is an excellent source for tutorials. Watch several and take tips from each.

I prefer yer bog standard Bike Ribbon tape, as opposed to the cork stuff, fells less puffy and tighter on the bars. Good old Benotto Cello Tape is good, too- no padding, but ye can wind a couple of layers on if ye want, and of course ye'll likely be wearing gloves anyway- I used to use it to cover bar ends, and I think Steve Kish still has some rolls in his for sale stuff.

As to wrapping, I start at the end of the bar, with half of the width over to tuck in and put the plug into, and proceed from there, kind of judging how it's going to finish at the stem end- if it's over, ye can cut it and tape if to finish off.

may sound daft but could you use road bar tape on a mtb?,anybody else done it?,ive large hands and struggle finding 150mm grips :?
