Got to sort worn bearings in the rear wheel of a BMX and an MTB (16" and 26" respectively)..

Do they (usually) both take the same size? What size is that? How many should each take?

Potential pitfalls would be useful too, never tackled owt like this before

if they are both screw on free wheels, then they should be the same. only prob may be if the bmx has 14mm axles, which i doubt it will.

They are both screw on freewheels (which reminds me.. I need a doodah to get those off too  )

The nuts on the BMX are massive.. like 16mm or something... pain in the bum.
Is that relevant (the size of the nuts, not that I am finding them an irritant to the posterior)??

What size balls then?? Seen 1/4" 3/16" and much, much more.....

yeah generally your axles will be the same size but when you take them apart, just remember how many in each side
i only undo the bolts on one side, that way you have a reference point when you put them back together.
really simple job

couldnt tell you sizes but could tell you by eye what bearing goes where

looks like the tool will do it 8)

erm i seem to recall 9 in either side, could be wrong though, might be 11 but i think that is pedals

pfft! i only do metric and couldnt possibly tell you what those sizes compare too or equal and what they look like in bearing size

if it helps, when i service mine they rarely need replacing. just cleaning and regreasing and re tightening

One axle has no bearings in it (or an axle, come to that.... should probably get a new one of those too :? )

The BMX wheel has about an inch (25.4mm ;) ) of play in it..
