Athena hanger doodah

Just taken delivery of this beauty & don't know what the hanger doodah is for or if it can be removed!
Any advice greatly received

Just use an Allen key to unscrew the mech off the hanger. I'm assuming you have a hanger that is part of the rear dropout

I don't have a replaceable hanger on the frame if that's what you mean?

So is this add on if you wanted to put gears on a track bike?

The hanger you have attached to your mech is for a frame with no hanger on the dropout, usually cheap stamped dropouts.

Just noticed, its a non threaded hanger with a frame saver nut on the back. You still just undo it but don't panic if the nut falls on the floor

Usually typically French!

You got it spot on, but unlike all my other mechs there is no recoil on this!
