At the tip. . .

I use Freecycle as much as I can, and give away things rather than chuck them.

We don't need to go down the road of becoming like the US. We have always been at the forefront of ideas, we can do things our way.

We normally only dump stuff that really is only fit for the dump..

The bike I chucked was a honking great pile of crap.. I considered offering it on freecycle but wanted to check out the dumps bicycle situation...

That and the only parts that weren't total crap and rusty/perished were the wheel rims..

problem is health & safety and litigation has stifled common sense. Gibblekings recycling centre could well find themselves beating off an ambulance chasing solicitor when little johnny has fallen cos the bike they sold had dodgy brake blocks. Similar lead-content paints etc etc. There are ways around it, but it needs specialist knowledge at the site to prepare or select things suitable for sale.

caister tip now sells for a small bit o cash all bikes they get plus a whole bunch of other stuff.i had a look the other day but they were mostly p.o.s stuff.at least they are recycling them tho//

But where does that cash go?
I once picked up a large reflecting telescope at our tip, it was in almost perfect condition apart from one broken bracket which I later fixed. However I had to give the chap £20 for it.
Later I thought to myself "He just pocketed that £20," I actually did them a favour by removing an item, one less thing to dispose of."
Maybe they used it for tea and biccies and that saved the council some of their budget but who knows? They did once tell me that the old screenwash I gave them would be used in the big dump trucks rather than tipped away.

They put the money in a pot at the local one here, and they have used it for such things as helping a worker with his kid's medical bills, and donating to a local play group.

Even if it went straight into the worker's pocket what is wrong with that?

Well, the telescope was not his to sell. It was effectively junk, my point being if its in the recycling centre, people taking stuff away again is a good thing, as its saves the cost of recycling and is better environmentally.
Just because he works there does not make the items his to sell, it'd be like a shop assistant pocketing the cash from a sale.

I might be just cynical though, they may well have a fund for local charities or suchlike.

I'd be happy to hand over some coin for something worthwhile.. wouldn't concern me in the slightest what happened to the cash - I'd probably be getting the better end of the bargain anyway 8)

A shop assistant pocketing the cash from a sale?

What a weird concept, so weird that there is something called a commission sale...

Let the guys have their perks.
