Advice please: DX wheels - 7 to 8 speed freehub conversion

Worth pointing out that you have to use the seals and cones from the DX hub on the LH side and the bits from an 8spd wheel on the right. Too much faff for my tastes when there were plenty of nice 8spd hubs. DX never being one of them as it was a 7spd group.

I used to just put an MTB axle and 5mm spacer on an FH600 Ultegra hub....

Dunno if it's relevant for DX but there were 2 hub shell widths for XT. If you have the wide one for 135mm rear stays, it means more wheel dish.

Warm cosy shed/ workshop, cup of tea, The Archers on Radio 4/ Thrash metal on BBC 6 Music.

Pot of grease, new bearings all lined up, the silhouette of man and cone spanner at one with the universe....

if wasnt for 'faffing' the world would be a dull place. DX hubs are exactly the same as XT, the seals and grease ports are interchangeable. Ask Pickle about his DX/ XT front hub that has a DX shell and XT seals/ innards.

I discovered that by 'faffing' - so faff, experiment, build yourself that 8spd DX groupset!

Almost but not quite....

I've done both mods. The 2 XT hubs I have, have a deeper lip where the freehub body sits. It's not a problem if you put a thin spacer on the cassette, or use the alloy spider type - but with "normal" cassettes, the rear of the sprocket will foul on the aforementioned lip.

This didn't happen with DX hub when I did the same mod.
