Advice on replacement chain

Thanks for taking the time to read.

I recently bought a Trek 850 Antelope. I am slowly taking it apart and putting it back together. Learning about bikes as I go. It has already thrown up some challenges with the suntour gear.

The chain is in a really bad state and needs replacing but I cannot find any meaningful reference to this particular chain anywhere. The cassette is 7 speed and the chain has HKK embossed on it and the word SPIRIT. I have only been able to find BMX HKK chains with similar markings but usually in different countries that cost the earth.

Can I simply swap it out with a Shimano 7-speed chain?

I'd really appreciate any pointers. Thanks.

Yes, any 7 speed chain will work but it's best to go for a well known brand. I think SRAM chains tend to last longer than Shimano.

Re:

BUT if your chain is worn (stretched) then it may not work on the cassette and chainrings. The new chain may skid over the teeth, if this happens you’ll need to change the worn parts.

I've used a lot of "silver" KMC Z51, Z7 and Z8, not had any problems with them. In my experience, good quality and much better value than Shimano. The last Shimano chain I bought was a real disappointment.
