A week in Beijing, what to do, where to go, what to see?

I get to go to Beijing for a week in the summer for work and they don't mind me adding on a week's holiday so as per the title, what to do, where to go, what to see?

just go out the hotel and walk about

everything is changing so fast out there its difficult to say
4 hours north is nice but take the wrong turn and its a steel works
ask some locals

Forbidden city is a must. The summer palace is cool. Try and find one of the old neighbourhoods with the shop houses and wander about. Hire a bicycle to get there. It's only a couple of hours th the great wall. Trek along it. Try and get permission to stay overnight in one of the guardpoats. Eat streetfood.

You'll have a blast.

make sure you get a pre charged card for the underground.

forbidden city, the temple of heaven, tianeman square in the evening, the chinese opera, the hutongs - not far from tianeman square and of course the great wall - you can get a bus to it from beijing.

Great place - cheap as chips.
