A Bit Too Close!!

Hi all,

Have you ever thought after the event that you should have checked something first - well this is one of those situations.

I'm just getting a mid 80's supervitus framed bike on the road - come to put in a set of Mavic MA3 rims with 700 x 25c Luganos and find I have approx. 1mm between the tyre and f/derailleur band - is that too close?

It’s probably better if you stick on 22’s or 23’s as it’s looks like you have vertical drop outs?

A lot of time trial bikes in the 70's and 80's were so short in the back that you couldn't fit a rear wheel with the tyre inflated - and this was with 18/20 size tyres!

Band -on front changer? No chance!

Re:

Being a bit old-fashioned, I've always stuck with smaller tyres - 18 to 21mm but it seems everyone is advocating larger tyres now, its not a major problem as these wheels were made to fit all the bikes I have - whatever happens I'll give them a try and see how I get on.

Too close for an everyday bike, like said fit 22mm or 23mm tyres.

I had a TT bike back in the 1980's, had stupid fag paper clearance, one day I came a cropper in wanting ultra close fit frame clearances,
one particular ride I had a blow out and it was the rear tyre! Turns out a foreign object got stuck on the tyre and as it tried to go by the
seat tube the object then gashed into the paintwork and in the process it slashed into the tyre....''BANG''
