964 vs 996

I am a strange person, off all the 911's that have ever left Zuffenhausen I like the 2 most controversial.

Question is, which one, water cooled vs air cooled?

For the record; budgetery constraints mean I am looking at Carrera 2 or 4's. No Turbo, RS or GT models at this price bracket!

For everyday use ?

I would go 996 as it is much more modern (looks / ergonomics etc) and I don't think I could live with the 964 everyday. Not quite old enough to be true classic yet either :? Probably a better buy financially though so double :? :?

My thoughts on this almost to the letter!

I do fear the depreciation of the 996, already under £15k and sinking, 964's have stabilised at around the £15k mark.

Also the lack of any 'gadgets' or electronic control systems make is more appealing to a confirmed member of the flat earth society like me!

The 996 is a much nicer prospect on a cold winter morning though! :D

The 996 if you want to impress the neighbours. I'd have the air cooled though. The last of the greats, classic looks etc.

996 is very nice inside and drives really well (carrera 2 anyway). Sadly never had the opportunity to drive a 964

996 is a bit, er , dull - I think its the Boxters' fault

theres one in my local paper for around £11,000 with pretty reasonable milage

964 classic looks but old design hiding in there, old safety (if any) but a fantastic sound, drive etc, etc

One of my former bosses had a run out model Carrera 4 964 and that was fantastic, he drove that in any weather despite the fact that he could leae ANY Merc model he wanted for £200 a month via Mercedes McLaren

i seem to flip between liking 993's and 964's the most.

But I think I have settled on a 964 RS being the fave of them all. That said, i reckon I could live with a lowered one that looks the same but isn't as scary. (tart).

Of your two here, I'd say 964 personally as 996's don't do much for me. I'm sur ethe 996 is much easier to live with and better etc, but it's just a bit...

I know all the purists hate the water cooled ones, I am no purist, but I do think the newer 911's sound like Nova's with big exhausts. Where as the older ones sound like Beetles with guts. :D

964.

I had the dilemma 2 years ago as to which 996 to buy - as I wanted a Carrera S but was put off by various things. Avoiding the horrors of RMS and IMS the deciding factor for me was that Porsche wouldn't warranty their engines past 100k. Lots of the 996's I was looking at were leggy but with full SH. Too much of a risk.

I got myself a 986S with all the trimmings instead (inc. the carrera rims) - and v. low mileage. Absolutely love it - but sadly selling now :( As it happens, the RMS let go after a month and was fixed under warranty with a new clutch. Still look at my neighbours 996 and think it'd be nice but love having the roof off and the 3.2 howling. Anyone want to buy it ?

If I was to get a 996 now, it would be a mark 1 GT3 with a comfort pack and for track day/fast road fun - but they are very very keenly priced. 964 is dream garage stuff as the only one I'd consider would be an RS as it is a proper bedroom poster special from my childhood.

Water cooled v's aircooled? I've never dipped my toe in that debate. They're both great cars - just the 996 is rather ubiquitious and are dropping into the chav it up and whack an aero kit and a GT3 badge on territory so people don't like it. After all, my Boxster S is in essence an Audi parts bin special :)
