I'm terribly fond of bicycles it has to be said.

However I despise gripshift and I'm stuck with the damn things just now.

Would the shifters work down to 7 speed? (not that I'm going to be limited to 7 for long once I find some affordable wheels)

shifters

I thought there must be at least one on here who was fond of bicycles, I know, I must be psychic or something, its a gift.

As for the shifters I think they would work on a seven, not something I have ever tried. It would only be a problem if there is too big a difference in cog spacing for the narrower shifting 9 speed setup. If that makes sense. I dont know really, maybe someone else has a better idea.
Will see what I can find out.

Tazio, 9 speed shimano sprockets are thinner and closer together than 8 and 7, which are close enough to be compatible. I doubt that you would get away with 9 sp shifters on a 7 cassette - http://www.sheldonbrown.com/k7.html#spacing

Mmmm, that's what I though might be the case. Might be a case of an upgrade component too far as I don't have the cash right now to upgrade wheels, freehub, cassette, deraileur etc in one fell swoop.

Damn the fool I bought the bike off who downgraded it to 7 speed.

With regard to shifters, 7 & 8 speed may well play nicely together, 9 won't :(

Mechs generally aren't too fussy though - they just go where the shifters tell them

But if your bike's been 'downgraded' to 7 then check that there isn't a spacer behind the cassette - unless they changed the whole wheel it's very possible that the previous owner may have put a 7sp cassette on an 8/9 speed freehub (8 & 9 speed cassettes fit on the same freehub as they are the same overall width), in which case all you need do is to take off the 7sp cassette & spacer & fit a new 8 or 9sp cassette, simples

Fingers crossed time I believe?

After much costing etc today it looks like I'll be sticking with 7 speed for a while, a luxury too far with the cash I've spent in the last fortnight....

Though I have just spent 20 quid at the woolyhatshop website on 7 speed rapidfire STX units.

Gripshift really are the devils works and should all be destroyed.
