'94 GT Avalanche AL find - and a bit of advice needed please

I do like the ball-burnished aluminium GTs from the 90s. This 1994 Deore XT/LX equipped Avalanche AL popped up for auction on aussie Ebay recently, described simply as 'Mountain bike'. The seat and seat post were missing - and it needs a few other new parts - but what the hell, right?

When I got it home I noticed the cable stop for the rear brake has been filed off. Any of the GT experts know if this is common, or should I be looking to get one welded back onto the frame?

Re:

Not common to do that. No need. I imagine someone ran it with v brakes and wanted a cleaner look.

Nice find though.

+1

...Find a u brake guide from an earlier 90s GT and run the cable like a U brake, that's the best solution I can think of

Cool bike though, it's like a zaskar on a budget 8)

Hey guys,

Yeah, I was thinking a u-brake or a dog collar type cable guide. I'll see what's around in this frame size.

And Fitzroy, you may have missed this because at the time I was distracting you with a boxed yellow Kore stem. Hope that's working out for you btw.

the dog collar type fits to the seat tube above the weld where it joins from the top tube and the cable stops on the GT are underneath the top tube making it useless on a GT, also the dog collar is designed for kona which runs a 27.2mm post and your avalanche (assuming its the same as the zaskar) has a 26.8mm so the collar wouldnt fit anyway. heres a pic of my old hei hei for you to see what i mean.

and heres a 1992 zaskar u brake i found on the internet with a GT cable guide

i hope this helps :D
