Posted this on on the Kona page but then decided to post up the build pictures that I took.
93 Fire Mountain (beater/beta build) - this FM frame was pulled out of a skip at Hobbiton by a friend of mine. Apparently Hobbits don't like "Fire Mountains"... I've asked her to keep an eye on that skip, hopefully one of the hobbits has a (Jamis 853) "Dragon" they don't like too.
Check the rear brake cable. I've never seen a leather patch protector put on a cable outer before. What a simple but wonderful frame protection idea. Was this common? It's lasted 24 years!
I'm guessing the booster was an add on.
Given the rust and general condition how did the chainstay protector last so well?
Somebody once loved this bike enough to put some XT on it.
A very original Kona seat! Might have to google "how to do patch seat repairs"...
Look what I found in the parts bin. They'll do nicely - much better than the tatty Altus levers.

Put on some a spare STX/Mavic wheelset.
Swapped the Altus shifters and brake levers for XT thumbies and the Kona canti levers. Changed the old grips.
Re-cabled and adjusted everything.
One of the XT thumbies had lost its cover so replaced it with one from another old shifter.
Time for a beer
Ready to ride.
