'89 Saracen Tufftrax headset size?

Hi everyone. Need to know if the headset stack height is important for a threaded headset on my 1989 Saracen Tufftrax? Need a new one for my restoration project but currently has threadless and a-head stem  , which I'm removing and going back to the original forks and quill stem.

Cheers in advance for any help

The stack height is important. Length of fork steerer minus the length of head tube should be no greater than the stack height of the headset, if it is you'll not get the lock nut to lock. On the flip side if it's a lot bigger you'll either need to chop the steerer on the forks down or use a couple of spacers. I tend to go down the spacer route as it gives the flexibility to move forks from one frame to another.

In my experience on my own 89 Tufftrax, you don't have a lot of stack height to play with at all. I had nice new STX threaded headset, and there wasn't enough thread to get the locknut on, so I had to dig the old top part out of the bin and settle for replacing just the bearing race.

Great info, thanks chaps. Will have to get my measuring stick out and do a little calculating as the original headset is long gone. Once again, cheers :)

This is aimed at I Beleieve In Fixies - Just so i'm 100% clear, it's the length of the steerer tube minus the headtube length = headset stack height. Should i be measuring the steerer tube length from the crown race as the original is still on the forks?
Cheers
