80s handlebar tape

Hello
I need to replace the bar tape on a 1982 Gitane road bike,what sort of tape would it have been fitted with,cloth,plastic ?

My 83 Raleigh came with cloth tape. I quickly replaced it with plastic Benotto. I am sure that previous bikes had used both. Did Bikeribbon come in about then?

Looking at the vintage Gitane site (on my phone)it looks like black cloth tape for most models and the afore mentioned bike ribbon on the top models. Bike ribbon is slightly padded and waterproof.

My old Dawes had leather tape but if your trying to stick with the original tape for the bike then cloth would be the correct choice going by what's been said ..
