Finally getting round to building up my Moho and have a 8 spd/9 spd issue.

I have some lovely Kooka cranks which have 9 spd compact drive rings on them.

I have 8 spd Sram stars and stripes kit to go on it.

Questions:

1. Can I run an 8 spd chain on the 9 spd rings with an 8 spd cassette at the back? Or do I need to run a 9 spd chain and will this be ok on the 8 spd cassette?

2. I'm presuming Shimano cassettes are ok with Sram kit? This is my first foray away from the big S.

A1: Yes
A2: Yes

You'll need to run an 8 speed chain, which wll work fine with the front 9 speed rings. Not actually convinced there is any difference between 8 and 9 speed chainrings anyway, supposed to be slightly narrower.

Sram will work fine with shimano cassette.

I'm pretty sure the shimano/ sram issue won't be a problem. Only incompatability with those two is (I think) the sifters/ mechs as they use a different ratio of cable pull.

As for 8/9 spd, hmm. Technically it shouldn't be that happy together, but I have used 8spd rings on a 9spd set up and it's worked and just recently a 9spd chainring on a 10spd set up, so you never know.

Obviously the main issue will be width of links/ teeth. You may experience more wear than usual if it does work? But then I remember a blackspire chain ring set i had that said 8/9spd on it and have had 105 and Ultegra SL in the last few weeks that have had 9/10spd written on them, so ?????

Try it and see, or of course, wait for a drivetrain compatability expert to come along, there are quite a few on here and I'm sure you'll get what you need before long.

Cheers guys - fount of knowledge as ever. Looks like I'll be ok with the set up I was going to run.
