Hi, I'm getting some wheels and would ideally like 7 speed, though 8 would be ok

the hubs are modern? Onza half fat branded.

I have a Deore LX old rear mech and thumbshiters

The thumbies handle 8's I know so...

:?: Can the old (7spd) Deore LX rear mech deal with 8 speed cassettes ok?

:?: SRAM or shimano, does it matter?

:?: can 7 speed cassettes go on these hubs with no probs?

either way I dont mind.

Cheers

My 1993 7-speed XT mech and thumbshifter coped fine with the change to 8 speed when I had to replace the worn out cassette last year.

Don't think so, I used a SRAM cassette without any trouble.

As MJN says you need a spacer, an alloy ring something along the lines of this.

The cassette spacings are identical between Shimano and SRAM. I think the spacings between 7-speed and 8-speed aren't quite identical, but they're close and I wouldn't be surprised if the thumbies would be ok. The only problem you might have is that SRAM do 11-32 8-sp cassettes and if you were tempted, you might well find that your old rm doesn't have a big enough capacity to cover all the combinations. But if you stick to 11-28, you should be fine in terms of rm/cassette compatibility.

Got an 8pd in stock so may try that for now and report back if it works or not. :) seems rude not to use that spare gear on the thumbies if it works :)

thanks

Sorry about that, lost ya's on second Q. :D

I meant does it matter what brand cassette I go for, and seems the answer is no on that score. :)

With cassettes,of the big modern 3,only campag are incompatible, that goes for 8,9and 10spd.Not sure about old Suntour stuff, used to know but its gone, bit of a problem as am considering xc pro for a build, does anyone else know?
