6 or 7 speed freewheels.

I have been running a 6 speed Regina freewheel on a 126mm hub, will a 7 speed fit or does that only work on 130mm hubs?

126mm will take 7 speed. My "modern" road steeds (a Carrera GT and a Falcon Banana (gas-pipe version)) are 126mm rears and take 6 & 7 speed wheels.

Should be fine. If you're just thinking of swapping out the 6 speed for a 7 speed on the same hub, then a little extra spacing on the drive side might be required, depending on how the wheel has been spaced and dished. I've had wheels built for 6 speed that needed this to run 7 speed, and so needed a re-dish. But 126 is the right length.

sometimes the 7th cog can foul the stays, even on MTBs this pops up now and again

It was always acceptable to just touch the dropout with a file if the chain only just touched. A mil maybe although in my younger days I have done 5x that.
