2x10 or 3x10 - is there a big difference?

Looking at the gearing for my latest retro frame / modern groupset build. Can either go with a traditional triple front chainrings or a new-fangled double. Any one have experience using a 2x10 set up? Do you still get the full range of gears on both chainrings?

Will be using either a 22/32/44 chainrings with 11-36 10 speed cassette

or

26/38 chainrings with 11-36 10 speed cassette.

I imagine it all depends how much time you spend in the big ring.
I prefer a bigger grannyring as opposed to a 22 as i find it too 'spinny'.
I had a twin ring FSA Comet chainset which was 27-42. I liked it but i would have prefered the 38 tooth big ring that is available for them, i just couldn't find one

I have been a triple guy for years but on my modern Santa Cruz I opted for 2X10...Love it! I have a 26/38 chainset and 11/36 cassette at the rear and I have not looked back or felt like I am missing any ratios....all I would say is that the ride on tarmac to the trails I get to "spin out" in the 38X11 faster...but I would rather have the range off road as this is where I need it. The 10 at the rear gives a nice subtle range of shifting, I find I shift more but the gradual increase helps me manage the trail better...

I've been using 2x9 in 42/29 x 11-34 with 26" wheels. 29x34 is just about low enough for anything. What on earth will you be climbing with 22x36?
I do find though that the range in the big ring is the top seven cogs, and bottom seven in the small ring.
The first 2x9 cranks I bought were Rotor Agilis from some young Manx racer chappy. The little ring was unused...
