1996 GT Backwoods

Retro Newbie
I have a 96 GT Backwoods and I am looking at getting it back up and running. Its all standard apart from the pedals.

I need to update it to be more current where possible so I am looking at replacing front and back derailleurs and brakes as well as adding front suspension. Any suggestions as I want to keep this under £250 if possible.

I am new to all this so would appreciate help along the way hence joining the forums. I will post some pics later on of the bike.

One of my big issues is the paint job it runs yellow into blue with flames and is not a bike that a 30 something should be riding. I was going to strip it of paint totally. Has anyone done this and can they give any advice?

Any help very much appreciated.

Here is the bike can anyone recommend any good ideas on what to do with it?

Re:

Sell it for 50-75.

Paint looks good and you don't see all that many of em.

gt had loads of polished frames you'd be better of just buying one than stripping this of paint.

never a fan of the early gts (bein a modern person but that gt is epic with that paint job DONT strip the paint
buy an avalanche of ebay for 150 ish quid as its what u need and sell this as it is

Anyone tried fitting these to replace cantilevers?

I know they are cheap but should do the trick. I don't want to replace the brake levers and have heard of problem solvers to stop needing to pull the levers so far. Anyone know where I can get these in the UK as their site does not seem to have UK stockists?

Are your brake levers seperate? You should be able to get lx v brakes complete with levers for £20 on here. I have sold three sets for that in the last few years. Easiest method if you ask me.
