Just a few pictures of the bike I picked up today. I haven't decided what to do with it yet, apart from give it a clean. I've wanted one of these since I've had mountain bikes. I had one briefly in 1990 but it got nicked after a week.

Looks to be in nice condition, the frame is a bit scratched but nothing too serious and it seem pretty original. Looks like the handlebars and front mech have been replaced recently but I've got some old specialized bars I can swap on.

On the plus side it has one ground control tyre in excellent condition.

Things I have in mind:

1) swapping the gripshifts for some trigger shifters. I'm just not keen on gripshifts.
2) swapping the cantilevers for some v-brakes. I have a set of XT M739 v brakes and levers, but theres no rear cable stop, just a noodle round the seat tube. Does anyone have any ideas that don't involve brazing on a rear stop or using a "problem solver" clamp on cable stop?

Re:

nice project base there ! totaly agree with the grip shift... should have been left to die with the Raleigh Grifter

Re:

fitted the v-brakes and handlebars this morning. looks a lot better but braking performance is worse. I'm hoping its just new pads needed.

found the XT V's a bit complicated. the pivots were very stiff to begin with

rear cable routing is a bit heath robinson but has the advantage of looking pretty good and being free...

Re:

Hmmm.

Things have got a bit out of control. The bike has been completely stripped and I'm heading off to Atlantic boulevard in Bury to see whether I can afford a re-spray.

The frame is worse that I'd thought and the drive side chain stay (which was wrapped in inner tube) is almost completely bare - looks like its been sanded back at some point.

Picked up some M740 shifters and a spare ground control tyre (umma gumma so that might look weird when matched to the black one) so its pretty much ready to be rebuilt once I've decided on the direction for the frame and got some new bearings for the hub and headset

Turns out I can't afford a re-spray just yet, so I've built the bike up to actually ride it 8)

Handles very nicely, its the first bike I've been able to track stand in ages!

Changes

Well, I think its finished. Its taken a bit of faffing around with brakes that don't work properly and general indecision, but its looking good and, more importantly, works. Hopefully I'll make it the Yorkshire ride next weekend.

The idea I've gone for is a "stumpjumper comp conversion." The 1996 catalogue had a stumpjumper comp with full XT and v brakes in the same colour as the standard stumpjumper. I've tried to upgrade the bike to match the comp spec.

Looking very nice indeed and i'd just touch the paint work up for as i'm fairly certain you'd get a decent enough colour match ....

Re:

Took advantage of the nice weather and took her for a spin along the Leeds/Liverpool canal.

Had terrible trouble getting the new Cane Creek 40 headset to adjust correctly when I bought it out of winter storage - once I'd taken out the play the headset would bind. Couldn't figure out what it was. In the end I took it back to the shop who diagnosed a seized bottom bearing! after 30 dry miles!

I'll buy a cheaper headset next time if thats the quality that £50 gets you. Luckily the shop replaced it free of charge.

I also picked up a carbon brake booster at the manchester velodrome cycle jumble. It makes absolutely *no* difference to the braking performance but I think it looks cool.
