1994 Rocky Mountain Altitude

A tremendous stroke of luck yesterday, and I now have the steel Rocky I've been looking for.

It's a '94 Altitude, 18.5", about half original with interesting upgrades and sad downgrades.

First, the bad;

- The top tube has a big dent in it (and a bunch of little ones too on the drive side) and has had all the paint removed. It's also been polished. I don't know why you'd do that, but I have to say I didn't realize steel polished up that nicely. It's ruined the very cool green to silver fade paint though.
- It has Alivio cranks, from probably 5 years ago. I'd guess the BB was swapped too, but I haven't looked at that yet.
- No name $10 tires.
- Missing the angle-cut seat collar.
- Someone put a wrench on the headset spacers, and the Syncros stem a little too.
- The fork lowers have been sprayed flat black, and the brake arch is broken.

The good;

- It's an Altitude.
- Avid Tri-align brakes with Tri-dangles, and a Brodie booster on the back.
- Original RaceFace headset (but the seals are missing I think).
- Hugi hubs (VERY loud) on Ritchey Rock 440 rims. I think they're 440s anyway - the stickers are removed and faded. It could be a Hugi cassette too. I recall that they made one with aluminium cogs that could be taken a part and reversed when the teeth started to wear down, but I didn't inspect it very closely yet.

- Selle Italia Flite saddle, in a really odd green colour, or maybe it's faded?
- XT thumbshifters and XTR derailleurs.

I guess I'll start with sorting out the paint. It would be great if I could just get the top tube done, because I don't want to lose the decals that are on it, but I could also get some made up and just redo the whole thing.

I have two sets of RaceFace cranks to possibly use, and some Shimano bits if I prefer. It really should have a Syncros bar and seatpost I think. For parts I'm pretty sorted, except for that seatpost collar. Does anyone have an extra?

That's two big projects then for this summer. And a couple of smaller ones. I need more summer actually...

Here's an album of hi-res pics if you're interested too;

I'm glad someone on this forum scooped this one up! I called the guy a half hour after he posted it for sale, and said he'd sell it to the 1st person that could pick it up. Since I was 4hrs away, I had to let this one go...even though I'd love to have an Altitude in my size. :)
I distinctly remember the sound those Hugi hubs made, yes they are quite loud! A good friend of mine that I raced with back in 94 had that same bike. It's a nice bike and a great find!

Re:

Very nice find indeed! Great to see a second '94 Altitude here on the forum. The colour of the frame is fantastic and very difficult to explain through a picture, I completely understand you try to avoid doing repaint. The mango coloured headset was specifically made for this Altitude and therefore now extremely rare. Originally they came with seat collar and turbine lp cranks both in matching colours. Odd to see we have the same cockpit. I run also cattlehead, dia compe SS7's and XT thumbies with XTR mechs. Although I think I will swap levers for SS5's somewhere soon. Good luck with the build, will follow with interest!

I think I was the first person to view the ad on kijiji. I was literally that lucky.
