Pretty sure it was made in Japan like you say. This isn't a "Made in the USA" model, the decal on the top tube simply says "Designed in the USA".

Last minute change of heart, I decided to save the dropbar conversion for later and go with flat bars for now.
The only dropbars I have on hand were probably made for a track bike; the sections where the shifters are supposed to clamp are too narrow. I never could stop them from moving around the bars even with a lot of torque applied... Second problem, all the 1" stems I have in my parts bin are too long. Finally, unless I'm lucky, I know I'll have some issues with road shifters being used with the mountain front derailleur and crankset combo...
Right now, we are in the last couple of weeks of good weather for biking before winter. Plus, the automn colors are gorgeous and there are some rides I would like to do with this bike before everything gets covered in snow. I still want this S-Works to have dropbars, but this will be a project for the winter months. I'll make sure to track my progress in this thread!
This bike was probably used a few times only, everything works flawlessly and the parts barely have scratches on them. The only things I changed were the shifters (not a fan of gripshifts) and the bars (since this bike is on the shorter side for me, I used wider bars with a slight raise).
As expected, this S-Works is both fast and confortable. I had a lot of fun yesterday during my first ride!

I like them, not very agressive and fast rolling so they're perfect if you use them on asphalt and light gravel.
If you’re having trouble with Roadie brifters on an MTB triple, why not try either a road triple shifter/mech/chainset combo (can often get them with a 74mm bcd inner ring), or use chainline spacers to narrow down the gaps? Or even a low ratio double - I’ve built a few bikes with normal road double brifters, normal road mech and a triple chainset simply without an outer ring and it works perfectly… I’ve done 24/40, 26/42, 28/44, all as good as gold, just make sure you get a good “middle” chainring with ramps and pins.

A couple of weeks ago, I finally replaced the flat bars by drop bars like I wanted to at first. It took a bit of tinkering and trial and error to be comfortable (like many of the drop bar conversions I did in the past). Now that I found the perfect recipe, I have no problem going on longer rides with it. It’s both quick and comfortable!
As for the shifting, I don’t know if it’s the Deore XT front derailleur, the shifters I used or the crankset (or a bit of everything and luck), but it’s not bad at all!

I know that some companies made higher end hybrid bikes in the early / mid 90s (the 1994 Klein Adept for example), maybe at the time the were trying to start a new trend? This probably didn't work very well since hybrid bikes stayed, but as lower end models for more casual riders...
It seems to use Prestige tubing. I'm not sure if it's for the whole frame or for the main triangle only. There is no indication on the frame itself and the only brochure I found is in GermanIt is very light though!
