1949 Schwinn Spitfire "Bomber"

Woollardjt

Devout Dirtbag
Always wanted a proper klunker and finished this one recently, coaster brake on the rear and drum up front. considering the frame was made in 1949 it handles really well off road. Single track is so much fun but getting used to the brakes is interesting ans you grab the front brake and not much happens, so you really need to plan ahead

Sweeeeet! How did you find that?

Beautiful bike! I've got a Schwinn DX frame, pre war, that I've been working on for awhile with the same thing in mind. I love yours.

oooooo is that the dx with the straight down tube and adjustable dropouts, id love one of them to build into a geared klunker, have you seen this site http://www.clunkers.net/ :D

No straight down tube but it does have the adjusting screws for the axle. I may be mistaken but I believe my wife determined it was built in 1939 based off of the serial. The frame is bare currently and may remain so. I stripped about 4 different coats of paint off of it. I now have a Schwinn "forged" front fork for it with original Schwinn light blue metallic paint. The wheels are some very pretty polished Campy 26" rims probably from the 90's with coaster brake. I'll probably get it built up this fall.....finally!
