19" Kona Hei Hei

"Jungle" headtube logo; originally blue decals; double cable stops on the toptube and "bottom-routed" rear mech: Early 1997?

... is it me, or does that downtube look a bit ovalized? No headtube gussets, though... it must be my eyes.

In the wait for the big man...
LOL! Yeah, I was hoping he'd turn up soon with the definitive info.

Kahuna had (from the tube description ) ovalised/directional shaped tubing

And the early ones did have "Hei Hei" stickers on the top tube.
Buuut... I thought ALL KKs had the front end gussets??
So until Anthony arrives, I'm putting that apparent tube shape down to "lens distortion"

[edit]Did Kahunas have a K or KK in the serial number? Maybe that would solve it?
Ah, Sunday evening... geeking-out over the interwebs.

Im wondering why that headtube is so steep - Hei Hei's or even Kahunas dont have THAT steep a headtube surely?
I think it's just the distortion from taking the photo from too close Jez. You can accuse Konas of lots of things, but having a steep head angle isn't one of them! I think the apparent tapering of the down tube is also caused by photo distortion.

The cable routing and surviving decals say it's a 97 and the lack of gussets says it's a Hei Hei and not a KK. They were sold with either yellow or blue decals, I've seen about equal numbers of each. I didn't know they were one colour at the beginning of the year and then the other colour later though.

You don't see many 97 Hei Heis, the KK seemed to pretty much take over.

Sorry for my lack of awareness on forum etiquette, but are we permitted to discuss realistic selling price here?

I'm know of previous deals on e-bay, and the amount that I would be prepared to pay - then there's some decals to sort out.

I'm not sure how much it would cost to reproduce the Kona and Hei Hei artwork - I understand that gil_m may be able to do this.

Any rate, I do agree with the remark that there is some odd camera trickery going on!

I think it will go for somewhere between £400 and £500  but we all know how fickle ebay can be

I've seen a 19" Hei Hei struggle to sell on here in the past while 18" ones seem to go as soon as advertised :?

Said I'd never get another Hei Hei as I never rode the last one  But if this was an 18" I'd be putting a bid of £600 in and expect to get it for that

Well, not quite ALL. This is the only picture I have of a 1996 KK, which has a slim top tube with no gusset and only a very small down tube gusset. You can't really see it from this angle, but it's visible in the catalogue picture. The main differentiator for the 1996 KK was the 6-4 stays, which do apparently give a stiffer rear end than the Hei Hei. Note that as this frame is a 96, it has the higher and non-Kona-like top tube design used on most but not all Hei Heis from 94 to 96.

It was the 97 KK that had a Hei Hei decal on the top tube and an additional KK decal on the seat stay. Wadsy has a very well preserved example of a yellow-decal 97 KK showing also the much fatter tubes of the 97
