18/19" steel hardtail for XC & touring/utility - £500 budget

A mate of mine has asked me to put out some feelers for a bike for his 40th birthday in May.

Needs to be something that could be adaptable for touring/utility use in the future - ie child seat/tag-along/trailer/mudguard/rack.

He's 5'10", used to 26ers but open to other wheel sizes, and he's got about £500 to spend on an 18-19" steel hardtail with decent forks, wheelset and hydraulic discs.

I suggested Genesis/Cotic/On-One or WHY?

My explosif could be a candidate as the basis. It'd need gears adding but the budget woukd be sufficient to cover the extra bits needed

The frame is made from Dedacciai SAT 14.5 which is nice tubing.

Its actually this frame (old FS thread) , condition wise it's very similar to the photos as I've hardly used it

It's a beauty! My friend has his eye on a Charge Cooker we were offered, will update thread as soon as I know more, thanks again

Fox F series fork, DT Swiss XR4000 rims on Hope pro II,
Thomson Stem and Seatpost
XT 3x9 gears hollowtech crankset &external BB
Hope headset
Easton Monkeylite carbon bars

I've an on-one inbred bit of a cobble together though Steel, though likely not the est



On one inbred 18" light blue 26er
Fork - Manitou black100/120mm forks(though I could swop that for a nice 2007 marzocchi MX)
Wheels - Rear Goldtech(oil filled?) on 121. Front Pro2 on mavic 719( or Hope sport on 121 ceramic)
Brakes - Mono mini (black) lever reservoir Caps are custom as ANDY, Hope this mates name is Andy Or ill find some to swop (PM/F IS/R)
Mechs - XO rear XT front
Shifters - X9 9 speed
Cranks - NEW X9 Crank/BB (Been used 5 miles) Thats NEW £160 cranks
Thomson Stem/Post(post is a bit tatty, stem is mint)
