10spd shifting on an old frame

Its a steel frame so more forgiving than people often take them for. Most people dont realize that they twang the frame around by quite a few mm when simply removing a wheel. I wouldnt even worry about frames like Alans or Vitus, have successfully run 130mm wheels in these frames over the years.

10spd freehub sized bodies have been around since Ultegra/ 600 8spd days so theres nearly 30 years of suitable frames and wheels sloshing around out there.

Yep I've got a few surprisingly old steel frames that will take a 130mm 10 speed rear wheel with ease. I built my Falcon Pro (which is getting on for 40 years old) up as 10 speed and then went back to an 8 freewheel as I needed to use the 10 speed setup on another frame, but that will go back to 10 speed as soon as I get the rest of the bits I need to build up another Campy 10 speed group.

Re: 10spd shifting on a old frame

I’m happy pulling a steel frame open and I’ve done it in the past, but my alloy Vitus feels more reluctant and I’m not happy that the cast alloy dropouts will take it long-term. It’ll pull open no problem but I wouldn’t trust the dropouts for very long on the pot-holed crap I have to ride on.

There is another dodge which I haven’t tried yet. On the freehub, the bottoms of the splines can be machined (or carefully filed) down so that the cassette sits further towards the wheel. It’s a trick used to get an 11-speed to go on a 10-speed freehub. I’m pretty sure the extra ~2mm gained is enough to get all 10 on a 7-speed freehub, as long as the bottom cog is an 11 or 12 so that it clears the stays.

Fitted up the 13-34 sprockets of a 10-speed 11-34 cassette, using 9 of the clicks on the Dura Ace 10-speed indexed downtube shifters. I had to make up a small spacer ring to get it to seat without the 11. It works quite well. I did a hilly 55 on it this morning.
