Is 1" ahead stem is still available for 25.4mm standard handbars in bike shops or internet, both of my local bike shops only sell 1 1/8 ahead stems, like to have in sand blasted black (satin/matte finish)

cheers

FirstFlight had a thread on here this week with links to a stash on sale in the US. There are also some for sale in Germany NOS on here but I can't remember who was selling them (sorry!)

I've got an Syncros that I could part with - PM me if you're interested and I'll dig it out. By memory, it's quite long though

Hi, just been to my local bike shop and had a chat with them, was advised to avoid shim in the stem as it's dangerous to use, was told to find 1" ahead stem for safety reasons, didnt realised doing project old bikes up was a stressful hobby, good job I am doing two bikes at the moment and that is it! I will just enjoy riding them afterward.

and i have a salsa aheadstem if your interested. just fyi thomson sell their road stems with a 1 1/8 to 1" converter shim so id think they were 100% safe to use.

It sounds to me as though your LBS was talking out of the back of their heads. I've ridden around 10,000 miles on 1" aheads.

I am stuck in the middle, one say one thing and another say something else, it make more confusing for me, I am not an expert in bikes stuff, I just got myself a 1991 Kona Lavadome and just want to build it back up for road use as I have the Cannondale for offroad.

I saw a 1-1/8" 3T stem today that was supplied with a 1" conversion shim so I would imagine that its perfectly safe if both them and Thomson do it.

I would go the shim route... gives you more choice of stems.
