    1991 Merlin Elevator rebuild

Finished my first Bomber rebuild (and learned a lot). Disassembling and removing the old fork oil from the Z2. Oil seals were leaking, oil levels were criminally low. Turned out that pilot bushings (the two cylinders with holes in them - I think holes are Z2 specific) are in great shape. I...

    1991 Merlin Elevator rebuild

A quick update... The 1 1/8" steerer tube has been removed and the Z2 crown has been fitted with a 1" steerer tube and an aluminium shim. Marzocchi didn't provide 1" alloy steerer tubes (stability) so the new tube is Cr-Mo. Next up is rebuilding the Z2! Head set and bottom bracket both...

    WTB Bon Tempe restoration

How noisy is the rear hub? May sound silly but I am looking to replace a HÜGI on a Merlin (which seems to amplify the noise) because it‘s just too loud. Was looking at a Chris King which makes a siren like („angry bee“) sound. Not sure I want that either 😅

    WTB Bon Tempe restoration

Awesome project! Can I ask if you plan to get Velociraptors for tyres? I am currently trying to get new ones since WTB still makes them and only in 26x2.1. It‘s just a bit hard to get them in Europe.

    1991 Merlin Elevator rebuild

Thanks to everyone who commented on potential forks for this bike. I am now going for a Marzocchi Z2 BAM💥 Here‘s a little comparison by weight: RockShox Judy XC with steel springs, 1600 gr — Marzocchi Z2 BAM, 1680 gr -- Marzocchi Z1, 2100 gr I haven‘t opened the Z1 and Z2 yet and just got...

    1991 Merlin Elevator rebuild

A good looking fork for sure! Had a quick look at it before. A perfect match based on style, but using elastomers?!

    1991 Merlin Elevator rebuild

Looks like the Z1 is more than a pound heavier than the Judy! I‘ll do a post comparing weights, once the Z2 is here.

    1991 Merlin Elevator rebuild

Coming back to mountainbiking after a 15 years hiatus and having relied on my trusted bike dealer in the past, it’s amazing to see how bike technology has evolved over the years. The plan is to fit a late 90s Marzocchi Bomber to the Merlin replacing the Judy. The Merlin being from the early 90s...

    1991 Merlin Elevator rebuild

I first got it to use as a penetrating oil to treat stuck cranks and bolts. „The spray, composed of various hydrocarbons, was originally designed to be used by Convair to protect the outer skin of the Atlas missile from rust and corrosion.[11][12] This outer skin also functioned as the outer...

    1991 Merlin Elevator rebuild

Next up was to apply the nearly 30 years old decals. This became the most nerve-wrecking job! Stickers wouldn‘t stick, the appliqué wouldn‘t loosen. It seemed impossible to complete and the instructions not matching the type of decal (use water to loosen and hair dryer to melt the glue into the...

Scotch-Brite 7447 update… Was really looking forward to this! The frame finally got repolished using strips of superfine Scotch-Brite. Quite a rewarding task! We basically went from this ..to this

Hi Fguki, I want to get in touch because of the Syncros decals. How on earth do you start a private conversation on this site? Seems like the best hidden feature

    1991 Merlin Elevator rebuild

You're absolutely right. I guess I really loved Syncros back in the day. It had a lot to do with the aesthetics of their products. Now I'm trying to restore the original idea of the bike but also fixing issues it had back then. That's why I am going for a 3rd gen post which fixed the breaking...

    1991 Merlin Elevator rebuild

So a little background about the bike: In its early days it had a Litespeed Titanium fork fitted which turned out to be terrible off road. It was replaced by a Rock Shock Judy XC. It also had Grafton Speedcontrollers mounted for some time. These were super noisy and couldn't be silenced and got...
