Specialized Stumpjumper Epic 1988 - the rebuild

Here are a few pics of the cleaned frame. Sorry they taken inside. Added a cleaned up XT rear derailleur to replace the STX. Cleaned the XT front. And after a bit of elbow grease and buffing the forks and frame cleaned up nicely. BB regreased and for now thinking of using a set of crank tension...

Specialized Stumpjumper Epic 1988 - the rebuild

Good day to all those who have had to fight the seized seatpost battle. Well I started the strip down of my Specialized Stumpjumper Epic as I have completed all my house chores👍👍 most things coming apart easily except for that seat post. 2 weeks of fighting, temp treatments, you name it!! After...

    Kona Lava Dome 1996 Rebuild

Thanks for the positive feedback. Went for a quick around the block and it runs nimble and smooth. Was not sure on the Mavics as not quite period but a bit of flare without going over the top.

    Kona Lava Dome 1996 Rebuild

Hi. Thought I’d share some pics of my latest project. I found the frame of this 96 Lava Dome Race Light online some time back and after sourcing a few original bits and pieces, decided to go with a slightly new look😉Found a set of Mavic wheels for her and XT rear derailleur and thumbie making it...

Specialized Stumpjumper Epic 1988 - the rebuild

Thanks👍 Was not a planned find, but an exciting opportunity. I had initially been in search for a 91 grey Stumpy when I stumbled on this. I have not yet envisioned the end product but I think these cranks will be in it. However good to know they have a home if they don’t work in the build😉 -...

Specialized Stumpjumper Epic 1988 - the rebuild

Fun begins in finding a set of dust covers for them…but stoked to have these on the bike. Can’t wait to get this project started.

Specialized Stumpjumper Epic 1988 - the rebuild

Thanks, I scratched up an old stem similar to this one I changed it to which has the cable integrated through the top so I will use that instead - amazing what one can dig up at the bottom of the box. I need to finish my Lava Dome project before I can really get to focus on this one. Though this...

    Are these Cook Bros cranks?

Did they have dust caps? I can’t seem to find any images online that indicate the CQP M2000’s had caps. Unless all the Cook Bros take the same caps?

Specialized Stumpjumper Epic 1988 - the rebuild

I’m going to do a complete strip down in the coming weeks amongst my other builds and go through the parts and see what needs to be replaced. I want to try get it back closer to the original spec but with my own custom touches. By the way the stem was annoying me so much I changed it out this...

    Are these Cook Bros cranks?

Thank you for confirming. I don’t know them well so please excuse my ignorance here. Are they any good? By this I mean, worth keeping on my Stumpy? Many thanks

    Are these Cook Bros cranks?

Hi, I posted a thread yesterday on my latest find: Specialized Stumpjumper Epic 1989. I was going through the bike in a bit more detail early this morning-excited with the new arrival!! And looking at the crank arms, could these be Cook Bros? Excuse the dust caps as these are missing...

Specialized Stumpjumper Epic 1988 - the rebuild

Thanks, I just couldn’t resist it when I saw it… been looking for a nice stumpy around this period. The stem will definitely be one of the first things to go. I have a extra XT rear derailleur so that’s another definite. Agree the catalogue finish will be awesome but maybe something for the...

Specialized Stumpjumper Epic 1988 - the rebuild

So this has arrived at my door. The years have made the swan into somewhat of an ugly duckling. The bones are still good though and it still has some original parts it seems. I’m open to suggestions as I am not sure whether to restore it back to period (late 80’s early 90’s) as not sure if...

    Cannondale Mtb SM2000?

This REALLY helps, thank you for all the insight. Discovering its the M2000 from 1992 has shed new light on the bike. Though the fact that it has been resprayed does disappoint. I would rather have had tired original painted frame than resprayed with wear marks. Might rethink its future in my...

    Cannondale Mtb SM2000?

60cm (23.6”) but according to the specs for m2000 they only went up to 22”. Could there have been customer specific sizes made?

    Cannondale Mtb SM2000?

Serial number BI-0301. Would that be correct-seems short?

    Cannondale Mtb SM2000?

Hi. So just checked and the serial number is on the inside of the seatstay. So does that mean it could be 91 or older? The components appear to match the 92/93 models.
