    1991 Kona Cindercone Build Thread

What's the bottom headset race like? Water usually gets into these and ruins them. The big rubber boot keeps it in!

1994 MARIN Indian Fire Trail - XTR 900 Halson Inversion PDS Forks

I thought blue anodising was 1993? ;-) I always liked these - didn't Marin call it "stripped rocket silver"? Are you going to add decals?

    Which model Flite is this?

Weighs 244g. Is it a variation on the Kevlar? They usually have a red and yellow logo.

    Cannondale identification please

The red one looks pre-93 from the graphics. My 93 M1000 was quite different.

    Which Paint Would You Use

That is good. If you use a really good powdercoater they can get a top finish but you will pay almost as much as a wet enamel job. I had some mudguards done in imitation chrome by Maldon Shot Blasting and Powdercoating, who are up there with the best but are not cheap. I've had lots of...

    Which Paint Would You Use

I wouldn't have powdercoat on a lugged frame. It's good on a Moulton F frame if you get a clear top coat as well.

    Sorted Kona Impact Headset

Here you go. Looks like I even got the washer in between the locknut and adjustable race (not really a race; it's a cartridge headset) so stack height must have been perfect. Tange say 34.5mm stack height. Replacement cartridges are the same as Cane Creek (threaded or A-head), so easy to get...

    Sorted Kona Impact Headset

Yes, I do. I can post a photo if it helps. There was no problem with thread engagement. It is an alloy headset so needs fitting with a headset press, not a hammer and a block of wood.

    Sorted Kona Impact Headset

There are two main types of Impact (Control Center was another name used) - the original one with a big rubber boot that tends to trap water rather than keep it out, and the later type with an O-ring on the crown race. They are a clever design but not all that durable, since they arrived just...

    Kona Kilauea 1993

I think the 91-93 Kona graphics were the best. I have a 94 Kilauea but it's not quite as pretty.

Retro Helmets! (I'll show you mine if you show me yours ;) )

I never wear one out of choice these days but I quite liked my Giro Air Blast in purple and orange (melted in a hot car, RIP) and my Specialized Sub 6. Not sure what happened to that one. Modern Giros don't fit me at all, so I have a cheap Bell for occasions where I am made to wear one.

How much does this hold up?

I understand cannabis is still illegal.

    Colour ideas please .

I was also going to suggest pale yellow (BMW Dakar Yellow). Or sage green (RAL 6011) or lavender. Not lilac, which is pale pink-purple, lavender, which is pale blue-purple. RAL 4005.

    Dynohub

They are desperately heavy (no rare-earth magnets back then, and that huge steel shell) but they do spit out about 2W, enough for most LEDs and especially the 1.5W rated lamps.

Brake lever hoods Shimano Dura ace 7402 levers

Are they any different to the common 1055/BL-R400 type?

I saw a Kirk chained up outside Paddington station last summer. Seemed to be a daily user.

Sold M737 SPD's, mint, never used

That was a bargain. I have several battered pairs of these and just paid £50 for two NOS axle units - not the whole pedals! Keep them packed full of grease, because, unlike later SPDs, they have no seals to exclude water.

Tightening locknuts on Deore DX pedals - drat and nuts?!

There are four versions of the tool now. The commonest are PD33 for M324 hybrid pedals and some others, and PD63 for M323 hybrid pedals and some others. Look up "SPD compendium" on the Cycling UK forum for an unbelievable amount of info on SPDs. "TL-PD33:Big end;13mm/10mm concentric sockets...
