Selling up and leaving the hobby - Your failure experiences?

As many of you have said so far, the main thrill is in the hunt and the build. After that, it turns into a nice object to look at, maybe ride and then what? I gloomily commented somewhere else on here a while ago that each and everyone of us on here will ditch the collection, large or small, at...

    Kona vs. Sunn

I raced a '98 Sunn Exact, and as @WimVDD says they are nice bikes; light and responsive. Also had a Columbus steel road Sunn at the same time and it was great too.

BoTM Bike of The Month August 2025 - Blue-collar Special - now taking entries

Love this photo @27motorhead. It's like the old boy is looking longingly at the track thinking '...when I were a lad'.

    Robert’s White Spider 1991

Sorry, I should have read the spec sheet better to see you're using XT 7-speed hubs. An 8-speed cassette will fit with some space tinkering - as always, see the immutable Sheldon for the low down: https://www.sheldonbrown.com/k7.html#897

    Robert’s White Spider 1991

Agree with you here, the blackwalls suit it perfectly. Nice build, though the obvious question is why given you're running XTR, including the shifters, are you not using an 8 speed cassette?

    Specialized Epic frame 54cm

I love these frames so would encourage anyone this fits and who's looking to go for it. Looks like offers being accepted so a real bargain to be had - a lot less than I paid for my two anyway...

Nope, no mercy. Skim harder for sullying a decent brand name.

    1990 Cannondale SM700 rebuild

Good to see the progress. However, please for the love of the baby jesus, remove the dork disk, go to your nearest body of water, and skim it across to a watery grave.

    Softride Suspension Stem....

I bought one for $20 from the US and the postage to the UK was about the same. I'm going to be using it on my next build for a bit of fun.

    1990 Cannondale SM700 rebuild

What a brilliant restoration you've done. I sighed when I saw the stripped back frame little knowing you had all the gear to make it look better than the original. And what a bargain price too with all those XT bits. Are you going down the original spec route or at least more period parts where...

    1989 Specialized Stumpjumper Epic

You did @Repacker , thanks again! Yep, it will get ridden but only gentle stuff to be honest, much like my Xizang. I've my GT Avalanche and a soon to begin other Specialized build that will be given the more thorough workouts.

Yep. I've had it since new and it was originally polished just like in the GT catalogue

Thanks. Standard 150mm stem. Any shorter and I'd feel like I was riding a city shopper!
