The end is nigh: Kona Bikes

/\ Nicely put Romanrinos /\ I have to say, back in 1991 when I discovered Kona bicycles, I was not a fan. The adult me can admit I was jealous. Jealous that I didn't pick a Kona when I was choosing my first MTB a few months prior. Jealous that the ad spiel made sense, jealous of that racing...

Panaracer reissues - different colours ?

Probably Panaracer switching suppliers of raw materials or even the mix ratios of different polymers have an affect on the colour of the finished product. All within tolerance I am sure.

Reynolds Frame Builder in the UK - 1999 Kona Explosif Project

/\ Absolutely. Sweeping a porch is a 5 minute job, but most folk these days wouldn't bother doing it for anything less than a tenner. It puts it into perspective.

    X-lite stem £550

Let's not confuse 'Asking' price with the 'Selling' price. 2 very different things. When I see a Marin Muirwoods FS on the bay for £400, I don't jump to the conclusion that my old bikes are worth a fortune, just that the seller must be smoking on some good gear. These items will all remain...

Reynolds Frame Builder in the UK - 1999 Kona Explosif Project

£110 for a towel rail to be fitted sounds fair these days. Quite frankly I doubt many people would go to that sort of hassle for much less. That sounds expensive in old money but in the current climate many people would probably turn down £110 for a couple hours work .... (awaits comment that...

Reynolds Frame Builder in the UK - 1999 Kona Explosif Project

Woodrups any good? I used to work with Kevin Sayles who returned to Woodrup a few years ago. I can vouch for his workmanship. I would have thought they/he would be Reynold's 853 certified.

The end is nigh: Kona Bikes

All anyone ever needed was a Purple Lava Dome with 500LX. This is a shame, the industry is so led by marketing & the marketeering folk, all the brands are slipping down the same tube it seems. I have had the feeling for many years that bikes are for the most part, much the same these days...

Decent frame pump . What happened to them

Lezyne Road Drive frame pump comes on Med & Large. Not cheap but a good pump no doubt. I looked on SJS cycles website to find it. They used to sell the Zefal HPX which is what I've had in the past, no longer made by Zefal I assume.

    1993 Lava Dome Pudsey

If you need something a tad bigger with 1" steerer. I've got a 93 Fire Mountain in what I reckon is the next size up from that. Were 93's still measure from the top of b/b shell hence making that one in the pic not actually a 19"?

    Ball Burnish polishing…

We have the burnishing drums/ceramic beads here where I work, but to get a frame in one it would have to be quite some size. Personally I would polish it by hand, just don't make the usual mistake of using course Autosol polish. It's quite abrasive & creates as many swirls & scratches as it...

Anyone ever been satisfied with Cantilever brakes ?

To answer the original post, YES. They can be great, with a good pad/rim interface (same pads don't play well with certain alloys) & the cable angles & geometry at their optimum they will work nicely. The black LX low pros on my Orange Prestige are really powerful. The rear can lock...

    The unofficial Bigfoot/Ozone/Smokestone thread

State of the industry: a running thread

I'd really rather not. I hate the big brands tbh, Spec, Trek, Giant. I have no sympathy for their downturn in profits or the warehouses full of unsold stock. Karma for what they have done to the industry maybe.

Component Cleaning / Lubrication Tips and Tricks

Cleaning an oiled chain, I have a square clip0lok sandwich container which is the perfect size. Fill with warm water & degreaser, shake & agitate. Rinse - repeat. Seriously clean chains with minimal effort. As for the preliminary oiling, apply plenty to get the lube right into the rollers...
